The scouts finished planting all of our native plants for phase 2 of this project. We have now planted around 2500 of them and this site will become a community gathering place with corrected habitat that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the area. We hope to inspire others to create improved habitats in their own land and demonstrate to the farming community the Best Management Practices for stream bank correction. This stream has had salmon in the past, but is currently in terrible shape. It is off the charts with high fecal coliform and dissolved oxygen…
We have several Enumclaw High school students using the site for research and study of our native habitat.
It has also attracted attention from the department of Ecology, EPA, King County and working on the City of Enumclaw. There is much education to do and this will take many years as the site grows into its former natural state. We also consult with the MIT to make sure we are doing this in the best possible fashion and respecting their culture. Historically this area had several gathering sites for them for hunting, fishing and food gathering. We are bringing back that food pallet of native plants on which they depended for survival.
